KWSN-Genome News - June 2001
June 30, 2001
-- 12 midnight EDT update: Congratulations to Hoc, who
passed the 500 wu milestone today, and also to Fart_in_Your_General_Direction
, who passed the 750 wu milestone. For the day, we produced 435 wu's with
contributions from 11 members. For the 7 day period, we produced an impressive 8032 wu's
with contributions from an equally impressive 20 members! Nice week everyone.
-- 12 noon EDT update: Two new members appeared in our overnight
production statistics - Antigens and MCM. Welcome
to KWSN-Genome! Thanks for joining the team and happy shrubbing. Please stop by the
message board to say "hello".
June 29, 2001
-- Members on the move: Congratulations to the following members who
reached production milestones today:
- Patsy, Greymoor, and Cindy - 500 wu's
- The Lady of the Lake - 250 wu's
-- 12 midnight EDT update: Our production for the 24 hour period was
336 wu's and our total for the 7 day period was 8252 wu's. 10 members contributed to
our production today. I think we will have to look at our production levels differently
now that Stanford has revised the scoring system. We're generally doing more work for less
credit and the work units have, on average, become larger. The effect is that we will
appear to be less productive and may have less contributing members on a given day. This
is not necessarily a bad omen, just a change in the way our work is done and scored.
Welcome to our newest member, TheMatrix. Thank you for joining our team,
and please stop by the Message Board to say "hello".
-- 12 noon EDT update: There is much discussion about the possibility of
several of the larger Genome@home teams merging. What does this mean to the project?
What does this mean to KWSN-Genome in particular? Greymoor posted on message on the UBB
regarding this topic. Check it out here, and let us know what
you think.
June 28, 2001
-- 12 midnight EDT update: Our 24 hour production was 286 wu's and our
7 day production totals 8269 wu's. 11 member contributed to our production today. Much of
our production decline relates to Stanford's rescoring of work units, and the
significantly larger work units that are being processed at this time.
-- 6pm EDT update: The 3rd party stats sites are back up, and the totals
are correct. Unfortunately, the sites inaccurately show all teams as producing 0 wu's for
several updates, but those numbers are added back in on the latest update. Anyway, the
numbers are correct which is what matters most. Information has been posted on the UBB
regarding the new scoring system put in place by Stanford over the last 24 hours. Your
review of and comments on this topic will be appreciated.
-- 12 noon EDT update: The 3rd party stats sites, from which I derive all
the information posted on these updates, are malfunctioning. This began after the midnight
update. Since they all went berserk simultaneously, perhaps Stanford is the culprit. In
any case, it's under investigation and hopefully things will be sorted out soon. The
Stanford stats appear to be working properly (at least our production numbers are going up
there). Based upon those numbers, we seem to have had a slowdown in overnight production,
perhaps the result of the larger wu's being used by Stanford recently. Also, Stanford has
restructured the scoring system in light of sending out larger units. More on that as
details come in. Our total production at noon EDT is 44776.80 wu's (I think).
June 27, 2001
-- 12 midnight EDT update: Today was an incredible production day! For
the 24 hour period we produced 4339 wu's, which included a substantial contribution from
Esthalan. For the 7 day period our production was 8447 wu's. Welcome back Patsy
and The Lady of the Lake.
-- Added links to Esthalan's utility. Genome Counter, and Das_Shrubber's utilities web
site to the "Software Utilities" section of this site.
-- 12 noon EDT update: Esthalan has been heard from! This was nothing
short of a spectacular update period. In the past 3 hours, we produced 3358 wu's! This
moved us comfortably past DTSO and into 28th position. Congratulations team! Esthalan
contributed 3251 wu's and moved into 3rd position on the team. Also, S600SEL has cracked
the Top 100 of all Genome@home users, occupying the 98th overall position. Outstanding!
Also, welcome to our newest member, scottsaxman. Welcome, and a hearty
Ni! to you. If you have a moment, please stop by the message board to say hello (under the
G&H and F&H topic).
June 26, 2001
-- 12 midnight EDT update: The major news today is that we passed Team
Anandtech at the 3PM EDT update, moving in 29th position. As of this update, we hold a
lead of 24 wu's. Server problems at Stanford, which appear to have been corrected at this
time, were a factor in getting wu's submitted and new work downloaded earlier in the
evening. This may explain our drop in production over the past 6 hours. We finished the
day with a 24 hour production total of 692 wu's, and for the 7 day period we total 4755
wu's. All in all, a very good day. Expect a battle with Team AnandTech for the next few
days, and note that we have gained substantial ground on the team above them, DTSO.
-- Members on the move: The following members reached production
milestones today:
- S600SEL - 15,000 wu's
- Axiel - 2000 wu's
- Fart_in_Your_General_
Direction - 500 wu's (and 4 places in the team standings)
- Epi2 and Kaj - 100 wu's.
Congratulations to all! In addition, the team passed 40,000 wu's today. Nice going!
-- 12 noon EDT update: Team AnandTech is not giving up without a
fight. At this update, we trail them by a mere 128 wu's. We have also been closing
in on the team above them, DTSO. While DTSO is still in the distance with a lead of 1914
wu's, we have consistently out-produced them over the past week and we should be
closing in on them rather quickly. Still well below us, TDIclub and Dutch Power Cows
continue to move up quickly with big daily production. We're still waiting to hear from
Esthalan, Patsy, and The Lady of the Lake, all of whom have been inactive
over the past 7 days.
June 25, 2001
-- 12 midnight EDT update: We closed very strong today, as S600SEL
contributed a week of production on the day's last update. Our production for the 24 hour
period was an outstanding 1494 wu's, and for the 7 day period our total was 4865 wu's. 11
members contributed to our production again today. We now hold a comfortable 1807 wu lead
over FOURINOX and we trail Team AnandTech by only 162 wu's. Will we catch them tomorrow?
Stay tuned.
June 24, 2001
-- 12 midnight EDT update: Our production for the 24 hour period was
449 wu's, and for the 7 day period our total was 4407 wu's. 11 members contributed to
our production today.
-- 12 noon EDT update: At midday, we've stretched our lead over FOURINOX
to a more comfortable 482 wu's, and we are currently 972 wu's behind Team AnandTech. As
mentioned in the last newsletter, there are 4 teams moving up very rapidly: Phreaks for
Gene Splicing, LNO Genome Black Belts, Dutch Power Cows, and TDIClub. These appear to be
recently formed teams that are producing big numbers. If you check the link titled
"Stats - All Teams" you will notice them 5-10 positions behind us. Several
members have told me that they will be bringing in some new recruits over the course of
the next few days, so it appears that the growth and positive momentum we've experienced
during the past several weeks will continue.
June 23, 2001
-- 12 midnight EDT update: Congratulations team -- we had a very solid
production day! Our total production for the 24 hour period was 656 wu's, and our total
for the 7 day period was 4252 wu's. We had 10 contributing members today. More than 1/2
of our production came during the last two 3-hour updates. We now lead FOURINOX by 464
wu's, and we trail Team AnandTech by 888 wu's. Team AnandTech's daily and weekly
production totals are similar to ours, so it will be a challenge to pass them, but
something tells me we'll do this in the next day or two. It appears that they have
increased their production as we began to close in on them. Since there have been some
reports of bad wu's that have crashed the genome software, I am concerned about the
following members who haven't been active in the past several days: Patsy,
HoC, Lady of the Lake, and Esthalan. If you are running unattended machines,
it might be advisable to check their status.
-- Added a page to the web site that is a running tally of our daily and rolling 7-day
production. The link is "Our Stats - Historical". Please let us know of any
ideas or suggestions you have regarding our stats pages.
-- 12 noon EDT update: We continue to hold our 30th position, although
FOURINOX refuses to give up. We currently hold a lead of 125 wu's over them, having
slightly increased our lead in the past 12 hours. Production is up a bit, with 10
contributing members, up from 8 at the midnight update. Team AnandTech has stretched
their lead over us to 1050 units. If we can maintain or narrow this difference, we
should be in a position to pass Team AnandTech on Monday, when S600SEL returns from
vacation and sends in his completed work.
-- Members on the move: Fart_in_Your_General_Direction recently passed
the 250 wu milestone and is quickly progressing toward 500 wu's. Das_Shrubber, a new
member, quickly attained 100 work units and is moving up rapidly. Hazy passed the 1000
wu level in the past 24 hours. Congratulations to all!
June 22, 2001
-- 12 midnight EDT update: Our daily output declined again today, with
353 wu's produced in the 24 hour period, and 3878 wu's for the 7 day period. 8 members
contributed to our production today, down from 11 members yesterday. On a positive note,
the team passed 37,000 total units at this update and we still hold our 30th position
with a lead of 73 wu's over FOURINOX. It has been a battle with this team for the past
24 hours. Team AnandTech, directly above us, stretched their lead to 936 wu's. Given the
drop in active members over the past 48 hours, may I suggest that our team check their PCs
for crashed apps or bad work units?
-- 12 noon EDT update: We relinquished 30th position to FOURINOX at the
9am EDT update, then recaptured it by a small margin at the noon update. Our production
has dropped markedly in the past 12 hours. I've noticed that my last several wu's have
been larger/slower. If others are experiencing this, that would explain our slower
production. Also, some of our active members have not contributed wu's in the past 24-48
hours, suggesting that we may see a wu infusion in the near future.
June 21, 2001
-- 12 midnight EDT update: We finished the 24 hour period with 463 wu's
and a 7 day total of 3922, a daily decline of about 200 work units compared to midnight
yesterday. 11 members contributed to our totals. We continue to hold the 30th position
that we gained earlier in the day, leading FOURINOX by 28 work units. Let's hope for
solid overnight shrubbing.
-- 9 pm EDT update: Congratulations team! At the 3pm EDT update, we
overtook FOURINOX and moved into 30th position by the slimmest of margins, 7 wu's. We
opened that lead to 30 wu's at 9pm. That's 3 moves by KWSN-Genome in a one-week
timeframe. Not too shabby, eh?
-- 12 noon EDT update: We maintain our 31st position with a 328 wu lead
over Better_Breed_of_Morons. With 9 contributing members over the past 24 hours, our 24
hour production total is 480 work units and a 7 day total of 3972, down slightly from the
past several days. We trail FOURINOX by 100 wu's and Team AnandTech by 609 wu's. As of
this update, the team has produced 2000 genes since its inception. That's quite a
milestone -- congratulations to everyone!
-- Welcome to our newest member, Das Shrubber! Thanks for joining our team. It's
nice to have you with us.
-- Members on the move: S600SEL is only 8 spots away from moving in
the Top 100 of all users. Axiel is 72 spots away from moving into the Top 1000 users,
while Esthalan is 46 spots away from the Top 2000.
June 20, 2001
-- 12 midnight EDT update: We had another solid production day,
producing 647 work units in the 24 hour period, and a total of 3934 work units over
the past seven days. We were very strong during the first half of the day, then our
production dropped rather significantly. We still hold the 31st position we gained
earlier in the day by a rather slim margin of 225 work units. Above us, Team AnandTech
moved past FOURINOX, which is now the team directly ahead of us. We trail FOURINOX by
179 wu's and Team AnandTech by 503 wu's. Our production drop over the 2nd half of the
day held us back from making another move up. Thanks to the following 10 members who
contributed wu's today: S600SEL, Axiel, VIRUS62, Hazy, Patsy, HoC, Epi, Fart, Cindy and
Das Shrubber.
-- 9am EDT update: Congratulations team! We have moved up a spot in
the team rankings and now occupy the 31st position, passing Better_Breed_of_Morons.
That team is one that occasionally sends in large wu dumps, so it will be interesting to
see if we can maintain our lead. We're about 170 wu's ahead of them. We've produced
4017 units in the past 7 days, and 599 units in the past 24 hours. These are good
numbers. Let's keep up the momentum.
June 19, 2001
-- 9am EDT update: S600SEL has been heard from, having contributed over
700 work units during the past few stats updates! KWSN_Patsy is back with us after a
brief absence. Based upon our strong overnight showing, the team stands at 35367.12 units
processed, a mere 115 work units behind the team above us -- Better_Breed_of_Morons. Will
we move up again today? Congratulations to Axiel who, through some serious shrubbing, has
moved into 5th place on the team.
-- At the suggestion of Fart_in_Your_General_Direction, a new page named "Performance
Tips" was added to the web site. This page includes tips and tweaks to increase the
speed of work unit processing, and includes a configuration section for modem users.
Member contributions to this page will be most appreciated.
June 18, 2001
-- 12 midnight EDT update: Today turned out to be nothing less than a
spectacular production day for KWSN-Genome. We processed 1037 work units --
congratulations to all involved!
-- 12 noon EDT update: Welcome to our newest member, KWSN_cindy, whose
first wu appeared in this update. Welcome to the team, and Ni! This was a strong stats
update for the team. We added 306.66 work units, with Esthalan contributing 252 wu's.
Way to go, Esthalan! This was our best statistical period in over a week, by far. The
5th position on the team is up for grabs, with KWSN_VIRUS62 leading Axiel by several wu's.
-- At the 9am EDT update, we had active 11 members (contributed work units) over the
past 24 hours. This represents a 367% increase in active members compared to where we
were just a few weeks ago! Additionally, several of our long-term members did not
contribute in this statistical period, so our total active membership is actually a bit
higher. This is real progress, my fellow Knights. Also, expect to see a few new members
in the near future.
-- Would our new member KWSN_Patsy please post a message in the
Folding@home and Genome@home topic on the message board? We'd like to "meet"
you.
-- It appears that we will soon have a "borging" package available. Thanks to Fart_in_
Your_General_Direction for pointing out this need. We will soon be able to run a fast,
preconfigured Genome@home installation that will run invisibly -- with versions available
for both NT/Win2k and Win9x. More to follow on this.
June 17, 2001
-- The first issue of the team newsletter was issued this morning. If you
would like to subscribe, please look at the top of this page to find the subscription
link.
June 16, 2001
-- We had a period in which we contributed work units in each of 15 consecutive 3 hour
stats updates. Unfortunately, that streak was broken at the 9am EDT update. Nonetheless,
this indicates that our team is producing wu's more consistently recently, though we are
still in need of finding some ways to increase our daily and weekly production volumes.
We retain our 32nd position, but the teams immediately above us have stretched our their
leads a bit due to better production over the past 24 hours.
-- At the suggestion of S600SEL, added a link on this web site called "Software
Utilities", which makes that component of the site more visible and easily
accessible. There are some interesting new utilities being developed for Genome@home.
Our own Esthalan ahould have one for us any day now. Check it out.
June 15, 2001
-- Welcome to our newest member, Amber438, whose first wu was tallied in the wee hours
of the morning. Welcome, Amber, and Ni!
-- Our weekly production tally shows contributions from 14 active members! As of the
12noon EDT update, our 24 hour production was 458 work units, with a weekly total of
3221.64. We solidified our new 32nd position by several hundred work units, but the 2
teams directly above us have extended their leads to 800-900 work units. Something tells
me that we're about to see some big numbers from S600SEL, who has been quiet for the past
few days.
June 14, 2001
-- A hearty welcome to our newest members, KWSN_Kaj and KWSN_Epi! Thanks for joining the
team and Ni!
-- As of today's 12noon EDT update, we are a mere 9 work units behind the team above us,
Project_Blue_Book. Dial in those work units, my fellow Knights.
-- 3pm EDT update: The latest update included wu's from Fart_in_Your_
General_Direction, KWSN_The_Lady_of_the_Lake and KWSN_Hazy. We have overtaken Project_
Blue_Book by about 40 units and have moved into 32nd place. We trail S_MDC by about 400
work units. Let's move into the passing lane!
June 13, 2001
-- Added a link on this web site called "Our Stats - Detailed". This links to a very nice
stats page that was prepared for KWSN Genome
courtesy of Den Hruza. Thank you, Den!
-- Current Team Rank. We retain our 33rd position with 31989.30
completed units. KWSN-S600SEL leads our team's production, having completed 12502.70
units and 702 genes.
-- The issue with KWSN_The_Lady_of_the_Lake's stats appears to have been resolved, so we
should see her in the team stats soon. Thanks to Greymoor for speaking with Stanford about
this.
June 12, 2001
-- KWSN_The Lady_of_the_Lake has joined our effort, and has produced 368 work units!
Unfortunately, the Stanford statistics have broken her off as a one-person team and her
name is incorrect (notice her at the bottom of our team page at Stanford). We will work
to get this resolved.
June 11, 2001
-- Fart_in_your_general_direction has joined the KWSN Genome
team, and has already processed over 30 units. KSWN_Patsy has also recently joined and
has contributed over 138 units. Welcome to both of you!
-- The KWSN Genome web site's final URL is
http://kwsn.kung-foo.org/genome. Please bookmark it. We continue to solicit input
regarding the site's layout and content.
June 10, 2001
-- KWSN_HoC and KWSN_Hazy have joined the KWSN Genome team, and each
have already processed more than 100 work units. Congratulations to both, and welcome!.
June 9, 2001
-- KWSN Genome, under the direction of Greymoor, has produced a
prototype web site, and is currently soliciting member input as we move toward the
final design phase. Please direct your comments to the KWSN Message Board under the
"F@H and G@H" section.
-- Current Team Rank. We are in 33rd Place with 30198.59 completed
units. KWSN-S600SEL leads our team's production, having completed 11764.74 units and
651 genes.
